Experiencing the Best of City Life in Bridgeland
By Jordan Illsley
Have you ever caught yourself longing for a new rhythm in life? Not one that brings rush or pressure, but one that creates space; space for connection, for community, for being fully present.
That’s exactly what I found on a quiet Saturday morning in Bridgeland.
My first stop of the morning was Good Earth Café – basically my next-door neighbor. I stepped in, was greeted by the friendly staff, and spotted a few familiar faces already seated inside. I ordered my go-to drink, a classic mocha (original, I know), and joined my friends while I waited. They were headed downtown to the Calgary Comic Expo, while I had plans to borrow one of the e-bikes from the building and make the most of the sunshine.
Naturally, the next step was to pair my coffee with a donut, so I walked across the park to Phil & Sebastian to browse their Hoopla donut selection. On the way, I passed dozens of runners stretching in the park. Some turned their warm-ups into spontaneous dancing as music played from speakers brought by the run club host. The whole scene was pure joy — had I brought my running gear, I probably would’ve joined in.
When I arrived at Phil & Sebastian, the patio was buzzing. Not crowded in a chaotic way, but full of energy – voices, sunshine, and smiles. There was still space to move around, grab a seat, and take it all in. And the donuts? Everything from London Fog to Dunkaroo to maple hazelnut.
I was in heaven.
All in all, it was the perfect Saturday morning.
I had been longing for a day like this — one that left me feeling rested and ready for whatever came next. In this case: the e-bike.
One of the features I’ve come to love at the Bridgeland building is the access to free-to-rent e-bikes for residents. It’s such a simple amenity, but it opens the door to a whole new way of experiencing the city. I grabbed one from the main level — quick and easy — tossed my water and keys into the back basket, adjusted the seat, and set of without a specific destination. I just knew I wanted to ride along the river. There’s something about the way the sun dances on the water, casting a gentle sparkle, that always draws me in.
I crossed over the bridge toward Memorial Park and followed the smooth, paved path. The bike practically did the work for me. I watched the speed tick from 10 to 20 km/h, wind in my face, and a grin I couldn’t shake. Clearly, I wasn’t the only one with this idea — I passed bikers, runners, rollerbladers, and coffee drinkers enjoying their conversations along the path. The whole city seemed to be soaking up the sun. A wave of gratitude hit me as I coasted along the river — for the warmth, the movement, and the freedom of a city that lets you slow down and still feel alive.
My route totaled 30 km, taking me along the river, through Prince’s Island Park, downtown Calgary, East Village, and eventually back to Bridgeland. By the time I returned, it was nearing dinner, and my family had just arrived after spending the day at the Calgary Comic Expo.
Excited to be just one stop from downtown, my nephew begged us to take the train so he could experience a taste of city life. We spent the evening wandering the streets of Calgary, admiring the skyline, trying new food, and soaking up every moment together. It was the kind of night that quietly becomes a core memory.
When we finally got back to the building, it was just after 11 p.m. We were tired, but full. I took a few minutes to jot down some thoughts in my journal before bed,.
Grateful for a day that was both simple and kind of magical.
Bridgeland is exactly that
A neighborhood where you can experience the best of city life,
but at a different pace.
